EVENTS

In 1426 William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley was born to James Berkeley 1st Baron Berkeley (32) and Isabel Mowbray (26) at Berkeley Castle

On 22 Oct 1463 William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (37) succeeded 2nd Baron Berkeley (2C 1421)

In 1466 William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (40) and Elizabeth West were married

On Nov 1468 William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (42) and Joan Strangeways were married

On 20 Mar 1470 the army of William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (44) including Maurice Berkeley 3rd Baron Berkeley (35) defeated the army of Thomas Talbot 2nd Viscount Lisle (21) at Nibley Green. Thomas Talbot 2nd Viscount Lisle (21) was killed. [Battle of Nibley Green]

On 15 Jan 1478 Richard York 1st Duke York, 1st Duke Norfolk (4) and Anne Mowbray 8th Earl Norfolk (5) were married at St Stephen's Chapel. An attractive match for Edward IV's second son since Anne Mowbray had inherited the vast Mowbray inheritance in 1476 when her father John Mowbray 4th Duke Norfolk (33) died. The ceremony was attended by Elizabeth York Queen Consort England (11) , Mary York (10) and Cecily York (8) . The day before Thomas Howard 2nd Duke Norfolk (35) was knighted In 1483 Parliament changed the succession so Richard York 1st Duke York, 1st Duke Norfolk (4) would continue to enjoy her inheritance (she died in 1481) effectively dis-inheriting William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (52) (who was subsequently created Earl and Marquess) and John Howard 1st Duke Norfolk (53) (who would become an ardent supporter of Richard III following Edward's death. [Marriage of Richard Duke of York and Anne Mowbray]

On 21 Apr 1481 William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (55) was created 1st Viscount Berkeley

In Jan 1483 Edward IV King England (40) had Parliament re-enact earlier legislation regarding the Mowbray succession so that his son, Richard York 1st Duke York, 1st Duke Norfolk (9) , who had married Anne Mowbray 8th Earl Norfolk (10) (who had died in 1481), would continue to benefit from them effectively dis-inheriting William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (57) (who was subsequently created Earl and Marquess) and John Howard 1st Duke Norfolk (58) (who would become an ardent supporter of Richard III following Edward's death. [Mowbray Succession Changed]

On 28 Jun 1483 John Howard 1st Duke Norfolk (58) was created 1st Duke Norfolk (3C 1483) by Richard III King England (30) . William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (57) was created 1st Earl Nottingham (4C 1483). Significant insofar as both men were heirs to the vast Mowbray estates that had been inherited by Anne Mowbray 8th Earl Norfolk (10) who had then been married to Richard York 1st Duke York, 1st Duke Norfolk (9) . Richard York 1st Duke York, 1st Duke Norfolk (9) 's father Edward IV King England (41) had attempted by very flawed legal process to legislate so that even in the event of Anne's death his son Richard would continue to benefit from the inheritance. Richard III King England (30) was restoring John Howard 1st Duke Norfolk (58) and William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (57) to their rightful inheritance. [Richard III Rewards his Supporters]

On 19 Feb 1485 William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (59) was appointed as Earl Marshal

On 22 Aug 1485 Richard III King England (32) was killed at Ambion Hill during the Battle of Bosworth. John Bourchier 6th Baron Ferrers Groby (47) , John Conyers, Thomas Dacre 2nd Baron Dacre Gilsland (17) , William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (59) , Richard Fitzhugh 5th Baron Fitzhugh (28) , John Scrope 5th Baron Scrope Bolton (48) , Thomas Scrope 6th Baron Scrope Masham (26) , Henry Grey 7th Baron Grey Codnor (50) , Edmund Grey 1st Earl Kent (68) , Ralph Neville 3rd Earl Westmoreland (29) , John Pole 1st Earl Lincoln (23) , Humphrey Stafford (59) , George Talbot Earl Shrewsbury, Earl Waterford (17) fought for Richard on the defeated Yorkist side. Thomas Howard 2nd Duke Norfolk (42) was wounded. Francis Lovell 1st Viscount Lovell (29) fought and escaped. John Zouche 7th Baron Zouche Harringworth (26) was captured. John Babington (62) , William Brandon (29) , James Harrington (55) , John Howard 1st Duke Norfolk (60) , John Sacheverell (85) , William Alington, Robert Mortimer, Robert Brackenbury, Richard Ratclyffe and Walter Devereux 7th Baron Ferrers Chartley (53) were killed

On 29 Oct 1485 Henry VII King England and Ireland (28) processed from Tower of London to Westminster Abbey. Ahead of him marched the heralds and sejeants-at-arms, the Esquire of the Body, the King's Secretary Richard Fox, almoner Christopher Urswick, the mayor of London and the Garter King of Arms. Also ahead of him were Thomas King Mann (50) , John Pole 1st Earl Lincoln (23) , John Vere 13th Earl Oxford (43) and William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (59) . Following behind were the only two Dukes: Jasper Tudor 1st Duke Bedford (53) , created the day before, and John Pole Duke Suffolk (43) . [Coronation of Henry VII]

Around 1486 William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (60) and Anne Fiennes were married

On 28 Jan 1489 William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (63) was created 1st Marquess Berkeley

On 14 Feb 1492 William Berkeley 1st Marquess Berkeley (66) died
