On 20 Sep 1643 the First Battle of Newbury was fought at Newbury with Charles I King England, Scotland and Ireland (42) commanding the Royalist army and Robert Devereux 3rd Earl Essex (52) commanding the victorious Parliamentary army. For Charles I King England, Scotland and Ireland (42) John Byron 1st Baron Byron (44) fought with distinction. Henry Bertie, Lucius Carey 2nd Viscount Falkland (33) , Robert Dormer 1st Earl Carnarvon (33) and William Villiers 2nd Viscount Grandison (29) were killed. Edward Villiers (23) fought.
